Koori Way - Development

Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) Workshops

A short interactive play about clearing the air for young mob to avoid smoking and vaping

Koori Way and ILBIJERRI are teaming up to develop and tour a new social impact work addressing the prevalence of smoking within First Peoples communities. This program is supported by the nationally funded initiative, Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS), which promotes preventing or quitting smoking and vaping to improve the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

WORKSHOPS

To develop this new creative work, Koori Way and ILBIJERRI staff will host a workshop program with a small reference group of 20 young First Nations people. Beginning with an initial two-hour online session and followed by an in-person two-day intensive, held in Portland, ILBIJERRI and Koori Way staff will facilitate theatre-style activities that explore the people they look up to and what influences their decisions using First Nations modes of storytelling.

OUR LEARNING MODEL

The workshops will follow a participatory theatre model proven to inspire positive learning pathways for First Peoples and communities. Our methodology adopts theatre as a tool for responsive, empowered youth-led teaching that centers First People’s knowledge systems, culture and community practices to support informed and preventative decision making around health issues. The workshops will be delivered in collaboration with TIS workers, community members and service providers.

ILBIJERRI'S SOCIAL IMPACT PROGRAMS

For over 20 years, ILBIJERRI has been deeply committed to its Social Impact program, an initiative designed to create innovative, culturally relevant engagements that connect with the community, spark critical conversations around systemic issues, and inspire positive social change. ILBIJERRI is passionate about delivering intentional and transformative experiences that address key challenges facing First Peoples.

ILBIJERRI has successfully implemented various models to deliver this work, each with unique strengths. Based on initial discussions with the VAHS team, which identified young people and community organisations as key audiences, we believe a version of THE SCORE model would be most effective for this project.
